Woman left fighting for her life after being given the wrong blood type in Pirojpur

A woman is fighting for her life after she was given blood from the wrong group at a private clinic in Mathbaria upazila in Pirojpur, claimed the family.

The victim — Surma Begum, 26, wife of Mostofa Biswas of Tetulbaria village in the upazila — is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Khulna, reports our Pirojpur correspondent.

Talking to the correspondent, victim’s brother Monir Hossain Matobbar said they took Surma to Monir Hossain Surgical Clinic located at Dhanisafa bazaar of Mathbaria on Friday.

After some medical tests, the doctor suggested giving blood as she was suffering from anemia, said Monir.

The clinic authorities said Surma had B-positive blood and asked them to arrange the blood type, he said.

The patient began to feel unwell after she was given the blood yesterday (Monday) noon, said the victim’s brother.

A second round of tests revealed her blood group to be O-positive, said Monir.

He also claimed that the clinic authorities did not test the blood which was used in the procedure.

Later, they rushed the patient to a private clinic in Khulna last night.

Contacted, Monir Hossain, owner of Monir Hossain Surgical Clinic, said that the patient’s relatives informed them that the blood group of the patient was B positive.

He also claimed that the two bloods matched while cross-checking.

Dr M Hasnat Yousuf Zaki, civil surgeon in Pirojpur, said they have come to know about the matter.

“If we get any written allegation over the issue, we will take step against the clinic,” he said.
