Samsung will provide private 5G network systems to the public and private sectors in South Korea

South Korea has been at the forefront of 5G development since the launch of next-generation networks, and as part of its initiative to advance the country’s private 5G ecosystem, the Korean government has chosen Samsung Electronics to provide a diverse selection of its 5G technologies. The initiative is designed to allow non-telecom operators to build and operate 5G networks using the dedicated 4.7GHz and 28GHz frequency bands for private 5G networks.

The project will see Samsung provide its advanced private 5G network systems to various organizations in the public and private sectors – including energy, security, water resource management, medical services and medical education. To expand the private 5G network in Korea, Samsung will provide 5G solution Compact Macro, with compact core and radios supporting 4.7GHz and 28GHz bands. In the public sector, Samsung will collaborate with three major government agencies to help ensure safety and efficiency in the workplace by implementing smart, artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled connectivity. Korea Electric Power Corp., the country’s largest power utility, plans to deploy Smart grid technology and create digital twins to improve safety and efficiency in the workplace.

A digital twin is a virtual replica of a power substation, and will facilitate remote monitoring and inspection of the entire site, reducing the need for physical site visits to improve worker safety. 5G-enabled wearable cameras and autonomous robots will also increase control and monitoring capabilities at various sites.

Government agency Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, which manages and supports industrial complexes, will deploy a 5G-powered digital security platform at various work sites. Samsung will help the firm develop an AI-based smart monitoring system to detect fire hazards and any other security risks or emergencies.

Korea Water Resources Corporation will use 5G technology to create digital twins of river basins to accurately visualize water flow and predict water disasters or flood damage. Digital twins of water treatment plants will aim to provide accurate AI-based simulations of water treatment processes, improving accuracy and predictability in water management.

In the private sector, Samsung will work with two of the largest and most technologically advanced hospitals in South Korea to develop advanced medical services and immersive applications.

Ewa Women’s University Mokdong Hospital Using virtual interaction will enable smart medical services such as 3D rendering of computed tomography for rapid reconstruction of medical images and real-time, long-distance surgical collaboration. Samsung Medical Center will use 5G to enhance its medical education program. Remote training will be included using examples Augmented Reality (AR) GlassesVirtual simulation of live surgical conditions and live-streaming of 360-degree recordings of surgical operations.
