The study fundamentally found that organizations today monitor their technology stacks with a patchwork of tools. At the same time, respondents seem to desire simplicity, integration, seamlessness and a more efficient way to complete high-value projects. They also noted that some of the main challenges preventing them from achieving full-stack observability were lack of understanding of facilities, lack of budget, too many monitoring tools and a disparate technology stack.

Some 60% said they primarily learned about software and system bottlenecks through multiple monitoring tools, compared to just 15% with a single monitoring platform. A quarter said they still learn about bottlenecks primarily with manual checks and tests that are performed periodically or in systems with complaint or incident tickets.

Just under two-fifths (38%) say their organization’s telemetry data is too siloed, and 29% say telemetry data visualization and dashboarding are separate. Nearly half (49%) said they experienced high-business-impact outages every week or more, and 62% said they took more than 30 minutes to resolve those outages.

Going forward, surveyed executives found that their organizations need observability for a variety of trending technologies, including artificial intelligence, 5G and Web3. C-suite executives expect the Internet of Things (56%), artificial intelligence (54%) and 5G (27%) to require the most observability over the next three years.
